Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 Premium edition

 

This is an excellent suite of programs from Microsoft ideally suited to the needs of smaller businesses. It consists of the following programs:

  •  Windows Server 2003 (file and print server)

  • ISA server 2000 (firewall)

  • Exchange email server

  • Microsoft fax server (simple fax service)

  • SQL server 2000 (relational database)

  • Outlook web access (access Outlook email, calendar etc from the web)

  • Outlook 2003

  • Windows Sharepoint services (Central web site for shared communications and collaboration)

  • Dial-in remote access

                                                                          

 

The software above provides the backbone computer services of most businesses at a low cost although it does restrict the system to one server only. An upgrade to the full Back-Office version allows the items to be stored on up to 3 servers providing better security. Security can be further improved in both systems with the addition of an external hardware firewall.

 

Recommended additional software

 

To enhance Small Business Server (SBS) 2003 we recommend the following additional programs:

 

  • Network Associates McAfee Anti-virus system – provides an antivirus that runs in Exchange and prevents viruses from reaching the desktop by email, also provides virus protection at the desktop.

 

  • Network Associates Spamkiller – dramatically reduces email spam and moves it into a junk mail folder in the user’s mailbox

 

  • Veritas Backup Exec for Small business server – provides reliable and sophisticated backup software.
